拉丁语是一门古老的语言，也是许多西方中小学生的必修语言课程之一。学习十一个现代英语(精品课)中常用的拉丁语词。

1. Ad hoc（临时）特设的；特别地

这个拉丁语词组既可以做形容词表示“特设的”，也可以用作副词，指“特设地、专门地”。

The committee was founded on an ad hoc basis.

该委员会是特别设立的。

The role was created ad hoc.

这个职位是临时特设的。

2. Bona fide 真实的

Craig is a bona fide expert in finance. He always offers marvellous insights into the latest economic trends.

克雷格是个货真价实的金融专家，他对近来的经济走向总有非常深刻而独到的见解。

3. De facto 实际上

这个词语表示“事实上、实际上”，与其相关的另一个搭配是“de jure 法定的”。

The headteacher is currently on holiday, which makes Ms Williams the de facto head of the school.

目前校长正在度假，这就意味着威廉姆斯女士现在是学校的实际负责人。

Tim is the de jure owner of the restaurant, but it’s his sister who runs it.

蒂姆是这家餐厅的法定所有人，但真正负责经营的是他的姐姐。

4. Impromptu 即兴的

这个拉丁语搭配的意思是“未经准备的，即兴的”。“临时表演、即兴做”的动词是 improvise。

I didn’t expect to be asked to give an impromptu speech at the ceremony.

我没想到他们会让我在典礼上即兴发言。

5. Per se 本身

I don’t dislike his personality per se, but we don’t exactly get along with each other, either.

我虽然并不讨厌他本身的性格，但我俩也不怎么合得来。

6. Veto 否决

这个词常用在正式场合中，做动词时表示“以官方的身份否定或禁止”。

The board members have vetoed their plan to develop the overseas market.

该公司的董事会成员否决了其发展海外市场的计划。

7. Vice versa 反之亦然

She regards him as her best friends and vice versa.

她把他看作最好的朋友，反过来，他也把她看成是最好的朋友。

8. Magnum opus 代表作

This painting is the artist’s magnum opus - you see this piece of work every time people mention him.

这幅画是这位艺术家的代表作，每次别人提到他时都能看到这部作品。

9. Alma mater 母校

这个搭配的含义是“母校”，是正式说法。“某个人的母校”在英语里是 someone’s alma mater。

Andrew has donated over ?10K to his alma mater to fund the new school library.

10. Quid pro quo 交换条件

Your personal details are a quid pro quo for the discounts offered by the company.

作为享受该公司所提供的优惠的交换条件，人们需要给出个人信息。

11. Status quo 现状

Once we decide to make the changes, we won’t be able to return to the status quo.

我们一旦做出改变的决定，就再也无法回到现状了。
